At Bayside Dental and Mid-Island Dental Associates, we understand that some patients may experience a great deal of anxiety during a visit to the dentist. We also understand that this anxiety may cause individuals to avoid dental care entirely, which can lead to further health complications down the road if dental care is delayed. To ensure that each patient can have a comfortable, anxiety-free, and pain-free experience at our office, we are happy to offer sedation dentistry, an option available to adults as well as children.
Bayside Dental and Mid-Island Dental Associates offers IV sedation dentistry, a technique that administers relaxation medication directly into a patient’s bloodstream. The procedure is monitored from start to finish by a licensed medical anesthesiologist.
Candidates for sedation dentistry are individuals who experience high anxiety, who fear care as a result of a traumatic or painful experience in the past, who have a bad gag reflex, or have a limited time to undergo dental care. Sedation dentistry is especially helpful with children who have not been able to cooperate during dental visits because they are too young to understand. Sedation dentistry can be used while a patient undergoes various types of general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry including porcelain veneers as well as periodontal treatment including implants. When you visit Bayside Dental and Mid-Island Dental Associates, we will be happy to determine if you are eligible for sedation dentistry.
You will be conscious during sedation dentistry but usually are unable to respond to your dentist until the procedure is completed. Since you will be in a deeply relaxed state during sedation, you will not be able to recall the details of the dental treatment.
With sedation dentistry, dental care is painless! The IV is not placed without numbing the area first. The remaining session is then completely anxiety and pain-free.
While you are sedated, your vital signs will be closely monitored by the medical anesthesiologist. If it is a pediatric procedure, the pediatric dental assistant, who is a licensed and registered nurse, will also assist in the monitoring.
You will need someone to both drive you to our office and drive you home if you are undergoing sedation dentistry. The sedative effects of the IV medication preclude patients from driving themselves to and from our office.
The effects of sedation dentistry will last from two to six hours depending on the extent of dental treatment required. You will likely need to rest an additional three to four hours after leaving the office.
